TURKEY - BÜYÜKATA İLKÖĞRETIM OKULU
ADDRESS: ŞAIR EMRAH MAH. BÜYÜKATA SOK. NO:20 NIKSAR-TOKAT
CITY/TOWN: NIKSAR-TOKAT
REGION: BATI KARADENIZ
WEBSITE: WWW.BUYUKATA.MEB.K12.TR
We are a primary school called Büyükata İlköğretim Okulu. It is situated in the Blacksea Region in the north of Turkey. Our school is in Niksar, the town of Tokat. It is a public primary school with 350 students who come to school from the nearby area and transporting from the nearby villages. The school is located in the suburbs of the town and there are many unemployed people and a lot of students live in poor conditions. Up to now, many of our students have had very little direct contact with people from other countries and culture. Moreover, there are a few of our students who have had the opportunity of travelling outside of our town.
In our school there are some students who have learning problems and need special support. They sometimes feel isolated and do not want to attend the courses. The curriculum of these students is adapted to their needs. As a result of education system of our country, most of our students and staff just concentrate on exams which are vital for their educational life. So as the teachers we are obliged to prepare students for the exams for their secondary school education. However we would like to broaden their perspective of life and prompt our students to look for different means of expression enhancing their creative skills.
It is the first time we take in EU project and are really motivated to work on such an important issue. Our school wants to cooperate with other European partners to become aware of the fact that environment education has a significant importance in terms of preventing environmental problems and providing a healthy and livable environment. We also want to develop language skills, positive attitudes toward foreign people and cultural differences. We believe that understanding awareness, tolerance ,respect and acceptance of cultural diversities comes through an open dialogue. Therefore ,contact on a personal one-two-one basis has always been one of the best ways combating prejudice and stereotypes.
We are the coordinating institution in the project which is responsible for the project organization and development, as well as for the planning and distribution of tasks and also for sharing information and keeping all partners informed.
