ITALY - ISTITUTO COMPRENSIVO "GIACOMO ZANELLATO"
ADDRESS: VIA CARRUBBIO 136
CITY/ TOWN: MONSELICE
REGION: VENETO
WEBSITE: HTTP://WWW.ZANELLATO-ICS.IT/
Our school, Istituto Comprensivo "G. Zanellato", is a low grade secondary school, formed by 2 nursery schools, 5 primary schools and 2 junior secondary schools. It has got about 1,000 students all together , a few of them are handicapped children and they are followed by support teachers and assistants. Only a few students are migrants mainly from east Europe and Morocco. Our recent migration foreign students are welcome at school with the support of language courses.
Our school is one of the three schools in this area and it is located in Monselice, a small town in an interesting area of Veneto in the north-east of Italy, in the nearby there are historical and natural places of interest. Monselice has got little industries but also a good agricultural economy; this area is well-served by transports (trains link it to the main cities with a railway station and a good coach-system link).
Families belong to poor and middle classes social status, but the main problems with children come from the disgregation of family relationships, nowadays more and more frequent. Our school tries to support these children in need with psychological support asked to local Authorities.
Some of our students have had recently experiences abroad but only as tourists or a few of them go to England or Spain taking part to studying holiday abroad.
Our school general plan underlines the importance of learning foreign languages (children learn English at primary school and English and Spanish at secondary school) taking into account the recent increased motivation this community has shown in these years; to encounter local needs, our school has organised extra language English courses and it has always tried to enlarge our students' European vision participating to national or local contests.
Now we would like to help them understand that Europe is not only a virtual reality, but a concrete experience where you can communicate to real people, meet real children, exchanging ideas and using a different language in a more meaningful context. We would like to teach our students accept differences and appreciate similarities, first discovering themselves and their own environment, thing which must not always been given for grant, and then finding out how other realities live and understand their own country.
Apart from all other necessary tasks, we are responsible for preparing the Eco-Booklet in the project.
