ROMANIA - SCOALA CU CLASELE I-VIII MATASARU
ADDRESS: SAT MATASARU
CITY/ TOWN: COM. MATASARU
REGION: SUD - MUNTENIA
Matasaru School is located in Matasaru village, Dambovita county and has a total of 13 teachers who are taking care of the education of 112 pupils aged between 6 and15 years. 48 of the students come from families with low income, reason for receiving social scholarships and free school supplies. Also, there are 8 students whose parents are working abroad. The village has a low social and economical level, the main occupations of the inhabitants being subsistence agriculture and breeding animals, so it is considered by the Dambovita County Council a socially and economically disadvantaged area.
Matasaru School is located in an area that hides a great diversity of species and valuable habitats (dragon flies' lake, little egret, white poplar, etc.) which need to be known and protected by the local community. At the village level is conducted an ecological restoration project implemented by Lafarge and WWF, and a garbage collecting project. Lack of information, environmental education and motivation of the inhabitants has a negative impact on the proper implementation of these projects. For these reasons, Matasaru School wishes to engage in an international environmental education project aiming to promote awareness of the interdependence between environment and health. Participation in this partnership will help educate students on recycling, resource saving, waste collecting and environmental protection, they becoming the means to educate their families and a model of behaviour for them. Also, collaboration with colleagues from other European countries will lead to an active exchange of experiences, ideas and solutions to large problems of environmental protection. Using English as a means of communication within the project will stimulate the development of language skills and participation in planned activities will increase motivation for learning, particularly among students who are socially and economically disadvantaged. Voluntary activities will create the prerequisites of active European citizenship, based on positive attitudes towards the environment, tolerance and respect for other people, cultures and lifestyles. All these will give our school a European dimension, leading to increasing its prestige in the local community and regional level.
In this partnership our task will be the creation of a multilingual dictionary in seven different languages including basic expressions for everyday's communication and some examples of words on environment.
